Indiana Association of Building Officials will host a seminar on January 28, 2016 to present and discuss 2014 Indiana Building Code, Means of Egress. 2012 IBC with 2014 Indiana Amendments.
Date: January 28, 2016

- There will be 1 hour for lunch
- Class will conclude at 4:00 p.m.

Class Information:
The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the fundamental means of egress requirements in the 2012 International Building Code (IBC).
Attendees will be presented with specific problems related to means of egress and will be asked to solve each problem using a set of plans for a four story college classroom/office building.
Goal: Upon completion of the course, participants will be better able to:
- List and describe each of the three parts of a means of egress.
- Identify the eight fundamental means of egress design issues.
- Calculate the occupant load and determine the required means of egress capacity.
- Determine the required number of exit access doorways and exits.
- Determine the requirements for arrangement of the means of egress elements, including:

- the location of exit access doorways and exits,
- the exit access travel distance,
- the common path of egress travel,
- any egress through adjoining spaces.
Objectives: Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be better able to:
- Determine the requirements for the design, including fire-resistance-rated construction, of egress elements, including corridors; stairways; exit passageways; areas of refuge and horizontal exits.
- Determine the requirements for door hardware, including panic hardware and door latching devices.
- Determine the requirements for locations and amounts of means of egress lighting and signage.
- Evaluate the adequacy of a horizontal exit as part of a means of egress plan.
- Evaluate the means of egress in assembly spaces.
- Evaluate the adequacy of accessible means of egress.
Instructor: Douglas W. Thornburg, AIA, CBO
Donald W. Thornburg, AIA, CBO, is currently Vice-President and Technical Director of Products and Services for the International Code Council (ICC) where he provides administrative and technical leadership for the ICC product development activities. Prior to employment with ICC in 2004, he was in private practice as a code consultant and educator on building codes for 9 years. Doug also spent 10 years with the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) where he served as Vice-President/Education.
In his current role, Doug also continues to create and present building code seminars nationally and has developed numerous educational texts and resource materials. He was presented with ICC's inaugural Educator of the Year Award in 2008, recognizing his outstanding contributions in education and training.
A graduate of Kansas State University and a registered architect, Doug has over 35 years of experience in building code training and administration. He has authored a variety of code-related support publications, including the IBC Illustrated Handbook and the Significant Changes to the International Building Code.
Please register no later than two weeks prior to class date. Registrations received after Thursday, January 21 will not be guaranteed class materials at the time of class.
Cancellation Policy - All cancellations must be received in writing no later than January 21, 2016 to avoid penalty. All late cancellations and no shows will be billed $50. Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received. It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification. Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.
