Introduction to Basic Residential Plan Review

A training seminar sponsored by the Indiana Association of Building Officials, Inc. a chapter of the International Code Council, Inc.


Indiana Association of Building Officials will host a seminar on September 22, 2016 to present and discuss the Residential Code.


Date:  September 22, 2016

  • Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
  • Class will start at 9:00 a.m.
  • There will be 1 hour for lunch
  • Class will conclude at 4:00 p.m.

Cost:

Member $50, this fee will cover the instructor and materials

Non-member:  $75, this fee will cover the instructor and materials

Lunch will not be provided



The Course is worth .6 CEUs/6 contact hours.


Class Information:
Class will provide introduction to the basic of a residential plan review, based on the 2005 Indiana Residential Code (675 IAC 14).  The participants will learn the basics on a non-structural plan review and the use of the various span tables.  You'll learn step-by-step processes to perform basic plan reviews.


At conclusion of the class participants will be better able to:

  • Identify and apply key code sections.
  • Understand the steps in completing a basic residential plan review.
  • Apply the 2015 InRC to the plan review procedure.
  • Identify where minimum code requirements have not been met and cite applicable code sections.
  • Understand span tables (structural review) including if structural load are in compliance.
  • Verify that foundation system design is in compliance with code requirements.

Presenters:  Shelly Wakefield and Brian Baker


Shelly Wakefield, CBO, is a Senior Plan Reviewer/Project Manager with Jacobi, Toombs and Lanz, Inc. Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors (3 years), where she performs building code plan reviews for the City of Indianapolis, Town of Sellersburg and the City of Louisville, KY,as well as planning and zoning consultant for the City of Rushville/Rush County Joint Planning Department.  Shelly has nearly 40 years experience in the enforcement of the various "building" codes adopted by the Sate of Indiana and hold several certifications on the various codes.  Shelly was previously employed by the City of Columbus/Bartholomew County Indiana from 1978-1993 as an Assistant Code Enforcement Officer (fancy words for Building and Zoning Inspector) and the State of Indiana as a Deputy State Building Commissioner and Director of Fire and Building Code Enforcement (20 years).  Shelly is a Past President of IABO (2004-2005 & 1996-1997) and has served on a majority of IABO's committees.  Shelly's passion lies with education and as a code enforcement person, there is always something to learn.


Brian Baker, CBO, is a Senior Plan Reviewer with Jacobi, Toombs and Lanz, Inc. Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors where he performs building code plan reviews for the Cities of Indianapolis, and Louisville, KY.  Brian has nearly 30 years experience in "building" code enforcement and construction industry and Brian holds several certifications.   Brian was previously employed by  Monroe County Building Department for 19 years and prior to Monroe County worked in the construction industry for 11 years.  Brian has been an active member of IABO and has served on the ABM committee for several years, concentrating on the vendor show.




Material to Bring to Class:
Participants will need to bring their 2005 Indiana Residential Code (including Indiana Amendments)


Registration Deadline:

The registration deadline is September 15, 2016, which is one week before the class.  Registrations received after Thursday, September 15 will not be guaranteed class materials at the time of class.


Cancellation Policy:
All cancellations must be received in writing no later than September 15, 2016 to avoid penalty.  All late cancellations and no shows will be billed $10.  Faxed cancellations must be verified they were received.  It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification.  Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.
