Medium Pressure Gas Piping - Systems, Design and Installation
Course Description:
This course will assist contractors, code officials, design professionals, and builders understand special topics regarding HVAC systems including venting & design installation and Fuel Gas piping and design.


Learning Objectives:
  • Identify design and code requirements for fuel gas piping systems.
  • Understand installation requirements for low and medium pressure fuel gas piping systems.
  • Perform design examples for low and medium pressure fuel gas piping systems.

Course Outline:

  1. Piping Materials
  2. Piping Installation
  3. Maximum Pressures
  4. Conversion of Btu/h to CFH
  5. Medium Pressure Gas flow controls
  6. Low/Medium Gas piping design (longest length & branch methods)
  7. CSST bonding requirements
  8. Testing fuel gas piping systems

Hydronic - Systems, Piping and Installation
Course Description:
This course will assist contractors, code officials, design professionals, and builders understand special topics regarding hydronic systems.  Content includes theory and application of basic heat transfer, types of hydronic systems and components and installation requirements.


Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand theory of basic heat transfer
  • Identify types of hydronic systems and components
  • Verify installation of allowable piping materials, valves, and piping systems.

Course Outline:

  1. Methods of heat transfer
  2. Application of changes in sensible heat
  3. Definitions of hydronic appliances and equipment
  4. Types of hydronic systems
  5. Water heaters used for space heating
  6. Operating and safety controls
  7. Hydronic piping

Mechanical Appliance Installation Requirements, Exhaust, Combustion Air
Course Description:
This course will assist contractors, code officials, design professionals, and builders understand special topics regarding HVAC systems.


Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define terms used in the 2015 International Mechanical Code (IMC) related to mechanical systems.
  • Define terms used in the 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) related to mechanical systems.
  • Identify design and code requirements for mechanical systems.
  • Identify design and code requirements for combustion air.

Course Outline:

  1. Definitions and typical appliances
  2. Access and service space
  3. Condensate disposal
  4. Appliance clearances
  5. Appliance/equipment installation
  6. Range hood exhaust systems
  7. Clothes dryer exhaust systems
  8. Combustion air requirements
  9. Combustion air installation

Presenter: Robert J. Schutz, P.E., P.S., CBO

Robert J. Schutz, P.E., P.S., CBO, has served as an Assistant Architect Administrator at the Ohio Board of Building Standards.  While with the State of Ohio, he has oversight of the new Residential Code of Ohio program, including certification of local residential code departments and personnel.  Previously, Bob served ICC as Manager of Instructors. His varied previous experiences include active military service during the 1980's as an Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) officer; building code enforcement for several central Ohio jurisdictions, including ten years as Chief Building Official (CBO) for the City of Powell where he also served as City Engineer and Director of Public Services; and Chief Engineer, for the Ohio Department of Health where he chaired the state's plumbing advisory board, was chief of plumbing and was a voting member on the Ohio Board of Building Standards.  He is experienced in combat construction, facilities engineering and project management as well as having been a plumber, sheet metal worker and brick mason.


Mr. Schutz has a civil engineering degree from Ohio Northern University with post graduate studies at the University of Southern California and the Ohio State University in environmental law, land-use planning and public administration.  He is a registered Professional Engineer and Professional Surveyor, certified Chief Building Official and holds Ohio certifications as Building Official, Plans Examiner and Inspector for Building, Plumbing, Electrical Safety and Residential.  Bob instructs IBC structural and nonstructural seminars, all IRC subjects, mechanical, plumbing and fuel gas codes and administrative topics.



Registration Deadline:

The registration deadline is November 8, 2017.  Registrations received after November 9 will not be guaranteed class materials at the time of class.



Cancelation Policy:
All cancelations must be received in writing no later than November 8, 2017 to avoid penalty.  All late cancelations and no shows will be billed $50.  Faxed cancelations must be verified they were received.  It is the responsibility of the registrant to make the verification.  Emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis.
